چکیده

This paper, inspired by the collection of papers in Wang & Smith (1997), discusses a restriction in synchronic Mandarin Chinese which involves voiced stops, rising tone and nasal codas. The paper argues that this restriction can be described only as the result of the combined action of two constraints, i.e. a ‘local constraint conjunction’. We discuss the exact formulation of this conjunction and note that, in Optimality Theory, the two constraints in a conjunction should also be instantiated separately. In this way, local constraint conjunctions provide a novel way of discovering constraints. The paper is organized as follows. Section 2 will give some brief background information on the relevant phonology of Mandarin Chinese, illustrate the basic facts and describe the generalization. Section 3 will introduce local constraint conjunction, and show how the relevant generalization can be captured in Optimality Theory (Prince & Smolensky 1993 [2004]; OT). Section 4 discusses the implications of this strategy and concludes by identifying areas for further research.

The Order of Mandarin Chinese Motion Morphemes and the "Scalar Specificity Constraint"

This study investigates semantic constraints affecting the order of motion morphemes in Mandarin multi-morpheme motion constructions (e.g., tui-hui recede-return). It classifies Chinese motion morphemes into three major types and proposes a “Scalar Specificity Constraint” to account for the order in multi-morpheme motion constructions. The constraint not only provides a better coverage of the d...

Comparative Study in Mandarin Square badge designs between Ilkhanid and Timurid garments with Yuan and Ming Chinese garments

With the conquest of China and Iran by the Mongols, the influence of Chinese styles and methods appeared in all the visual arts, including the patterns of fabrics. These designs were also used on the clothes of those in power, which was of special importance in different periods and was considered a royal emblem. Mandarin square is one of the royal symbols. This Chinese royal emblem was also us...

The Co-occurrence of Two Delimiters: An Investigation of Mandarin Chinese Resultatives

Tenny (1987, 1994: 79) proposes the Single Delimiting Constraint that the event described by a verb can only be delimited once (cf. Goldberg 1991, 1995). The constraint applies the effects of delimitedness as an aspectual property to the mapping of semantics and syntax, and explains why sentences with two delimiters (e.g., *Martha wiped the table dry1 clean2 Tenny 1994: 80) are unacceptable. Th...

Markedness and Lexical Typicality in Mandarin Acceptability Judgments

It has long been known that native speakers judge nonlexical forms as more acceptable the more lexically typical they are (i.e., similar to real words). It has also been shown that speakers judge less marked (i.e., universally more natural) structures as more acceptable than more marked structures. In this study, we investigate for the first time how markedness and lexical typicality interact, ...

Using Theory of Constraints in Production Management and Scheduling (A Case Study)

In manufacturing institutes the only access way to maximum profit is identifying the production mix of the products based on the limitations such as policies and politics, demand and production processes. This study identifies the constraints of a tile-manufacturing company including constraints in its production and demand line using LINGO software version 15, and identifying production bottle...
